In Chinese medicine, the peony flower (right portrait) is used to help blood flow in the body, much like a heart. My paternal grandfather died of a heart attack. The wisteria plant’s roots (left portrait) are used as extracts for anti-cancer compounds to help reduce the growth of tumors. My maternal grandfather died of lung cancer. In East Asian culture, the peony represents hope. The wisteria represents longevity. With these two meanings in mind, I have created a piece that portrays how my family’s tragic past fails to define my future.
